JAMMU, Nov 9: Inter-Battalion Sports meet-2016 was declared open by Additional Director General of Police Armed (ADGP),  L. Mohanti here today at a colourful function held at Sports Stadium Gulshan Ground.
More than 500 men and women sports personnel and athletics, representing 13 battalions of IRP and Armed Police Jammu Zone, are participating in the 10-day long Tournament which will conclude on November 19.
Inaugurating the mega sports event, Mohanti said that sports create camaraderie among the youth and helps them in maintaining their physical and mental fitness. He advised the youth to take part in the sports activities and avail the benefits of reservation provided by the Government under sports category in competing different professional examinations.
He said that the tournament is an annual event in which sports personnel from the Battalions of IRP and Armed Police (Jammu Zone) participate to excel their talent in varied disciplines including athletics, basket ball, volley ball, hand ball, tug of war, boxing, wrestling, weight lifting, swimming, shooting, hockey, Kabaddi, marathon. short put, hammer throw, javelin throw, discus throw, long jump and high jump.
Giving further details, Mohanti said that Tournament is being played at different venues including Gulshan Ground, Jammu University, KK Hakku Stadium and District Police Lines. All the events of the Tournament are being played on knock out basis as per the rules laid down by All India Police Sports Control Board.
Elaborating the importance of sports, the ADGP said that the Tournament is organized with the aim to create sportsmanship among the personnel to enhance their discipline and talent. He said that the occasion also creates a team spirit among the participants to face any hostile situation in day-to-day activities. The tournament helps the organizers to identify the talented sports person to form a strong contingent which could represent the Armed Zone in the Inter Zone Tournament being organized by JKP annually. The selected players also go ahead to represent the Organization at other national and international competitions, he maintained.
Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and participants, IGP IRP (Jammu Zone),  Yoginder Koul, who is also Chairman of Organizing Committee, gave a brief resume of the Tournament. He said that to make the event a success the organizing committee had made good arrangements for maintenance of playing fields and also proper sanitation in and around the venues. He said that the sports activities have been proving much effective in boosting the morale and physical fitness of the police personnel. The Inter-Battalion Meet would provide opportunity to the personnel performing professional duties in different areas of the State to get together and interact. These personnel during the tournament feel themselves in a very friendly atmosphere which cultivates a spirit of competition, patience and brotherhood among them.
Among others, the inaugural meet was also attended by IGP, Armed Jammu Zone, SA Watali, DIG Armed Jammu,  Alok Kumar, Nodel Officer CO IRP 10th, Mohan Lal, Asstt: Nodel Officer, Sandeep K. Metha, Sports Officer, Aman Thakur all Jammu based Commandants of Armed and IRP Battalions and other police officers.
