JAMMU, Mar 12: Indian Air Force, Punjab and Sindh Bank, New Gurdaspur Club and Punjab Police today outplayed their rivals in the quarterfinal battles to enter into the semifinals of the ongoing 4th All India Police Martyrs’ Memorial Hockey Tournament, underway at KK Hakhu Astroturf Hockey Stadium, here.
In the quarterfinals played today, Indian Air Force defeated BSF, Punjab and Sindh Bank got better of Namdhari XI, New Gurdaspur Club outplayed J&K Police and Punjab Police trounced Corps of Signal to enter the semifinals of the Tournament to be played tomorrow.
The first quarterfinal of the day was played between Indian Air Force and BSF, in which the former emerged winner by 3 goals. BSF scored only one goal in the stipulated time. Damanjit Singh of India Air Force was was adjudged SNTPL Man of the match for his outstanding performance.
In another match, Punjab & Sindh Bank outplayed Namdhari XI 2-0 by scoring goals in 18th and 55th minute of the game to become the second team to cruise into semifinals of the tournament. Parvinder Singh of P&S bank was declared SNTPL Man of the match. Mr Javid Mattoo, Staff officer to ADGP Armed who was the chief guest on the occassion presented him a cash prize of Rs 3,000 for excellent display of the talent during the match.
The third quarterfinal of the tournament was won by New Gurdaspur Club defeating J&K Police 5-3. Both the teams scored one goal each till the end of second round. The match was later decided by penalty shootout during which New Gurdaspur Club overpowered J&K Police by scoring four goals while the State Police team scored only two goals to be on the losing side. Gurjeet Singh of New Gurdaspur Club was awarded SNTPL Man of the Match.
The last match of the day was played between Punjab Police and Corps of Signal in which the former emerged winner 5-4. Satvinder Singh of Punjab Police was adjudged SNTPL man of the match.
In semifinals of the tournament being played tomorrow, Air Force will take on Punjab and Sindh Bank, while New Gurdaspur Club will lock horns with Punjab Police to vie for the top honours.
