JAMMU, Jan 21: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) an amalgam organization of elected Panchayat members at a programme here at Press Club today paid rich tributes to Habibullah Mir, Sarpanch who was killed by militants last week in Sopore area of Baramulla district of North Kashmir.
Speaking on occasion Shafiq Mir, Chairman AJKPC said that Sarpanchs and Panchs will not surrender before any terror diktat and will fight for strengthening democracy in the State for which one of their colleague Habibullah Mir has sacrificed his life.
Mir said that once again the Panchayat Conference has taken a bold step not to bow before any pressure, but it is unfortunate that the Government has not shown any interest towards the safety and security of the Sarpanchs and Panchs which indicates that it was deliberately silent so that the Panchayat members get terrified and not raise the issue of empowerment.
He said AJKPC has become target from both the sides. As on one hand the State Government does not like this organization for demanding empowerment of Panchayats and implementation of 73rd Amendment and on the other hand the militant organizations see AJKPC the only outfit which do not allow the Panchayat members to surrender before their diktats.
While speaking on the occasion, Anil Sharma, general secretary of AJKPC described the killing of Habibullah Mir as a direct attack on AJKPC.
