SRINAGAR : Alert troops foiled yet another infiltration bid when they gunned down two heavily armed militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector in north Kashmir.
A soldier also laid down his life, official sources said.
They said troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from Pakistan occupied-Kashmir (PoK) early this morning under the cover of darkness.
When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened indiscrminate firing with automatic weapons.
Troops also retaliated and the fierce encounter continued for more than half an hour during which two militants were killed.
A soldier also lost his life in the encounter, they said adding operation in the dense woods was still going on.
This was second infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector during the past 24 hours. Early yesterday a militant was killed by troops.
For the past fortnight about a dozen infiltrators were killed by troops near LoC in the north Kashmir.
A senior army officer said a large number of trained militants are waiting in launch pads at the border to sneak into this side before the infiltration routes were closed due to snowfall.
However, troops have already intensified night and foot patrolling all along the LoC to foil any infiltration bid. (AGENCIES)
