NEW DELHI, Sept 11: Natrang Director Balwant Thakur who is also the representative of the State of Jammu & Kashmir to the General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi i.e., National Academy of Music Dance and Drama met its Chairman, Shanker Sen at Sangeet Natak Akademi Headquarters, Rabindra Bhawan, here today and apprised him the about the present state of the performing arts of Jammu & Kashmir.
During the discussions, Balwant Thakur demanded that a special consideration be given to the State of Jammu & Kashmir and few dying forms of performing arts which need urgent be supported under Sangeet Natak Akademi’s various schemes of the promotion and preservation of performing arts.
The Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi assured to support the individuals and the organisations engaged in the promotion of performing arts in J&K. This state has always been the priority and will continue to be supported by the Akademi in its future initiatives. As of now over 40 cultural institutions of the State are supported by Sangeet Natak Akademi under its scheme of the financial assistance to the cultural institutions which is the highest number of organisations amongst the states of Northern region. This is the highest support under the scheme J&K has ever received.
Sangeet Natak Akademi has planned a National theatre festival ‘Rang Sangam’ in Jammu and under its initiative of the revival of the vibrant Bhand Pather of Kashmir, production of 20 new plays followed by their performance in a series of festival will also be organised in the current year. In addition to this many organisations and individuals of the State are being supported by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi under UNESCO division’s scheme of safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage and diverse cultural traditions of India.
Balwant Thakur proposed that in addition to Bhand Pather, many performing art forms like ‘Kud’ ‘Bhakhan’, ‘Karkan’, ‘Geetru’, ‘Dhambali’, ‘Kashmiri Sufiyana’ Music’, ‘Laddi Shah’, ‘Chakkari’ and tribal performing traditions of Gojri, Pahari, Balti and Ladakhi be documented, preserved, patronized and promoted by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi in the larger interest of the revival of the cultural life in the troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir.
