Bangladesh in Women’s T20 Asia Cup SFs after beating Malaysia

DAMBULLA, July 24: Bangladesh secured a commanding 114-run victory over Malaysia in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. This emphatic win not only highlighted Bangladesh’s formidable form but also set the stage for an eagerly anticipated semifinal showdown against India on July 26.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh’s top-order batswomen set the tone with a masterful performance on Wednesday. Murshida Khatun played a dazzling innings, scoring 80 runs off 59 balls, showcasing both power and finesse. Her innings, laced with boundaries and driven by impeccable technique, formed the cornerstone of Bangladesh’s imposing total of 191/2 in their 20 overs.
Captain Nigar Sultana contributed significantly as well, anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 62 off 45 balls. Her composed and strategic batting ensured that Bangladesh posted a formidable total.
Malaysia’s bowlers were unable to stem the tide of runs, with only Elsa Hunter and Mahirah Izzati Ismail managing to take one wicket each. The Malaysian attack was largely ineffective against the aggressive Bangladeshi batters, who capitalized on every opportunity to score freely.
In response, Malaysia’s chase was marred by consistent pressure from Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack. Nahida Akter emerged as the standout bowler, claiming 2 wickets for just 13 runs. Rabeya Khan supported her superbly, picking up 1 wicket for 10 runs.
The duo dismantled the Malaysian batting lineup, which struggled to build partnerships and succumbed to a mere 77 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Elsa Hunter was the highest scorer for Malaysia with a modest 20 runs, but her effort was insufficient to counter the relentless Bangladeshi bowlers. The rest of the batting lineup faltered, and Malaysia’s innings was characterized by a series of misjudgments and missed opportunities.
Bangladesh’s all-round performance marked by explosive batting and precise, disciplined bowling has set them up as formidable contenders for the upcoming semifinal against India. Fans can look forward to an electrifying encounter as the two teams clash in what promises to be a thrilling contest. (UNI)
