SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Even as there was no report of any major untoward incident in entire Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours and the weekly flea markets also witnessed huge rush today, a group of miscreants caused damage to two trucks in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, late last night.
Reports said that a group of miscreants started pelting stones on vehicles plying on Anantnag- Kulgam road resulting into damages to two trucks.
“Two truckers which had arrived in the area to load fresh apples for ferrying to outside the State were targeted in Qoimoh area of Kulgam district,” a police officer said adding that the miscreants also attempted to put both the vehicles on fire.
A case has been registered in this connection against the unidentified miscreants, who had managed to flee after the incident, police further said.
Meanwhile, people thronged the weekly flea market in Srinagar today while some shops in the city also opened in the morning hours. However, main markets across Kashmir were shut and most of the public transport was off the roads as normal life remained affected in the Valley for the 63rd consecutive day.
The weekly flea market, locally known as Sunday market, was open as several dozen vendors had put up stalls on the TRC Chowk-Lal Chowk road. The market witnessed huge rush of customers as people thronged it to buy clothes and other items in view of the approaching winter, reports said.
Though main markets and other business establishments in Kashmir remained shut, some shops in the city were open till 11 am, but downed their shutters afterwards.
Auto-rickshaws and few inter-district cabs were also seen plying here, but other modes of public transport were off the roads. The movement of private cars was lesser on Sunday as compared to Saturday.
Even as there were no restrictions anywhere in the Valley, security forces were deployed in strength in vulnerable areas to maintain law and order.
Mobile services remained suspended in Kashmir except in Handwara and Kupwara areas in the North, while Internet services — across all platforms – continued to be snapped in the Valley since the night of August 4-5.
