Beefing up border surveillance

This year has seen a big increase in infiltration bids of the jihadis along the LoC and even IB. The policy of security planners in our country is that the infiltrators are given zero opportunity of infiltrating. The army and security forces are heavily engaged on the LoC with Pakistan and the border with China in Ladakh in defending our territorial integrity. We have a long, topographically forbidding and porous LoC. Its foolproof security is not physically possible, and the jihadis have succeeded a number of times in infiltrating into our side. The army and border forces have done a wonderful job but the government is thinking of raising the level of surveillance and reconnaissance. It is for this purpose that the Northern Command of Indian Army has called international tenders for buying 49 pieces of Unarmed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for regular surveillance of the border with China and PoK in the State. As per its requirements, Army has specified that the mini UAVs should be complete in all aspects of electronics sensors, propulsion system, on-board camera, control mechanism, trans-receivers, re-chargeable batteries and packing case. In the tender, Army has specified that the UAV should have the capability to take-off and land without needing any kind of runway besides it should have an auto pilot on board with mission pre programming capability to undertake autonomous operation and return on base on its own.
We have been stressing on the point that we need to reinforce our LoC controlling system. In modern warfare, there is much dependence on technical, electronic and digital options. In surveillance of our borders with both Pakistan and China we need to make use of latest gadgets such as UAVs and the rest of it.  We know that the purpose of Pakistani Army and ISI in increasing their infiltration bids and firing incidents is to provoke India for retaliation in a bigger way that would lead the two countries to a war. Pakistan army finds its survival possible only in a state of perpetual confrontation with their Indian counterparts. But hopefully our policy planners will not fall in the trap. Pinning them down to the LoC is the best policy in given circumstances. It has already begun to show results. UAVs will surely streamline the intelligence capacity of our border forces.
