JAMMU, Nov 28: A youth, who had to become bridegroom tomorrow, was arrested by police this evening after father of a girl lodged complaint with RS Pura police that the boy was already engaged to her daughter and without canceling the engagement was solemnizing marriage with another girl.
Rajesh Kumar, 26, son of Inder Pal, a resident of Chakroi, RS Pura, an LIC official posted in Rajouri, was arrested this evening after verification of the complaint of the girl’s father, SDPO RS Pura Diwakar Singh said.
He added that Rajesh Kumar has been booked for cheating (Section 420 RPC) apart from Sections 509 and 342 RPC at RS Pura police station and put behind the bars. Family of the girl, to whom Rajesh Kumar had to marry at Sarore Adda in Bari Barahamana tomorrow, has sought Rs 10 lakh from Kumar for the expenses they had incurred on banquet hall and other arrangements for the `barat’ and the marriage.
Police said Rajesh Kumar was earlier engaged to a Government teacher of village Agre Chak and had also solemnized ring ceremony with her in July this year.
Later, he engaged himself to a Government Lecturer residing at Sarore Adda in Bari Barahamana and the marriage was scheduled to take place tomorrow. He had concealed the reality from the Lecturer that he was already engaged to another teacher. He didn’t inform the first girl of his engagement at another place.
Today he called up the Agre Chak girl to his house and informed her that his marriage was scheduled tomorrow and she shouldn’t create trouble during the `barat’.
However, the girl turned agitated and staged a dharna there seeking justice. Police parties rushed to the spot.
Later, father of Agre Chak girl lodged a written complaint with RS Pura police after which the cops arrested Rajesh Kumar and registered a case of cheating and wrongful confinement of the girl against him. The girl, who was on dharna in the boy’s house, was restored to her family.
Police said the family of Sarore Adda girl has approached RS Pura police and sought Rs 10 lakh from the boy for the arrangements of marriage made by them, which they were forced to cancel.
Police was investigating the case.
Few days back, another `barat’ from Nanak Nagar had failed to turn up at City Palace, Kachi Chawni after it was found that the boy was already married to another girl and had children from her. Pacca Danga police had arrested the bridegroom.
