Srinagar Nov 17: Panic broke out in the high security zone of Gupkar this morning when a Border Security Force (BSF) man, posted on security duty at the residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accidentally fired few rounds in air.
Omar expressed full confidence on his security team soon after the incident. “Not withstanding today’s incident with the BSF jawan stationed at my residence in Srinagar today I have full confidence in my security team”, he wrote on twitter soon after the incident.
Chief Minister was not at his residence at the time when the incident happened as he was out of the Valley for campaigning for the Assembly elections.
Sources said that the constable fired twice outside the residence of Chief Minister around eight rounds from his service rifle. He was overpowered by his colleagues and his rifle was snatched. And senior police and BSF officers reached the spot to assess the situation.
A BSF spokesman said there that constable Kunal Ghosh, posted on peripheral security duty at the CM’s residence, accidentally fired few rounds this morning. “No one was hurt in the firing but the constable was immediately over-powered by his colleagues and disarmed”, he added.
The spokesman said that the BSF man will not be posted on duty again till the inquiry into the incident is completed and he is given clearance by the doctors.
The spokesman further said that Ghosh is physically fit but was behaving abnormally this morning. “He is not talking to any one since the incident”, he added.
“There apparently no administrative issue for him to behave abnormally but the inquiry will find it out about cause of his abnormal behaviour. He has been availing the leave entitlement. There is nothing on that front,” the spokesman said.
The residence of the Chief Minister at Gupkar is guarded by BSF round the clock. The area is high security zone where his father and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed resides and has offices of several intelligence agencies.
