JAMMU, Dec 24 : In a significant step to find out international as well as national markets for exporting apricots, the most famous fruit of Ladakh, the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Rigzin Spalbar called on Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, Anand Sharma at Union Capital.
The CEC apprised the Minister about the abundant production of superior quality apricots in Ladakh having very good marketing potentials in both national and international markets. However, he regretted that this highly valued fruit of Ladakh failed to make way in such a remunerative marketplace. Mr. Spalbar requested the Minister to assist LAHDC in its proper marketing so that the poor fruit growers of Ladakh would get handsome profits for their produces which otherwise fetch a meager income or go waste usually.
The Minister for Commerce & Industry gave positive response to the CEC and assured all possible help from his ministry. He also committed to update the LAHDC about the role of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APFPEDA) through which agriculture produces could be exported. He informed CEC Spalbar that Hong Kong is one of the possible area showing keenness to import apricots from India.
Meanwhile, CEC directed Executive Councilor for Agriculture Sonam Dorjey to conduct detailed survey about the total annual production of quality apricot in the district.
