SRINAGAR, Oct 26: For the empowerment of women in the State, every section of the society has to play its role, making the women-folk self confident. Jammu and Kashmir Police, as a social responsibility is also taking some initiatives to inspire girls towards sports and refine their talent in the arena.
This was stated by Chairperson, Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association (PWWA), K. Vijaya Rajendra, while inaugurating 5-day State Level Girls Sports Educational Awareness Festival at Indoor Sports Stadium here today. Giving the details, she said that for the upliftment of sports and empowerment of women in the State, Jammu and Kashmir Police has taken initiative to organize the festival in the summer capital for girl students. The festival will be held up to October 29, in which different games would be held viz Athletics, discus throw, shot-put, javelin throw, track event 100 mtrs and 200 mtrs race, football, tug of war, volleyball, shooting, kho-kho, kabaddi, handball, archery, cricket, Judo, Carom and skipping chess. Cultural programme with traditional events by the participants was also a part of the function.
The Chairperson said that in the festival, more than 1500 girl students from various schools, colleges, private educational institutions and clubs from the Valley would participate. Besides two cricket teams of Youth services and sports from Jammu and 40 students of Police Public School Jammu are participating in the festival.
Mrs. Vijaya appreciated the organizers for their efforts to organize such an event in the summer capital with participation of girl students from different parts of the Valley and Jammu. She described it as a good initiative to encourage the women sports persons by creating awareness among them about the sports activities. She said that such initiatives would be step forward for empowerment of women in the State.
On the occasion students presented a colourful cultural programme and exhibited Kashmiri traditional items.
Among others, the inaugural ceremony was attended by DIG CKR G.H Bhat, lady members of PWWA, Joint Secretary Sports Council Zameer Ahmad Thakur, member Sports Council Bashir Ahmad, Chairman Sports Disciplinary Committee Nazir Ahmad and Superintendents of Police Zubair Ahmad Khan,  Kulbeer Singh and Manoj Koul, prominent sports personalities, principals of various educational institutions and other civil and police officers.
