JAMMU, Mar 23: Castigating the slogan of strengthening secular forces by voting to Congress-NC alliance, former Union Minister Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta said that the coming together of NC and Congress is new one. This experience of Rajiv-Farooq Accord of 1986, is still resulting in violence and bloodshed. What fresh bonhomie between these jilted lovers would lead to, is anybody’s guess, he added in a statement issued here today.
He said but the manner in which the NC Patriarch has extended his support to separatist leaders of Hurriyat Conference, as also attempts to glorify the terror by saying that youths are fighting for Azadi of “Kashmiri nation”, is a matter of serious concern and the Congress being a national level party, needs an explanation that weather it also support statements of Dr. Farooq and his likes”.
About the slogans of strengthening of secularism through this by poll, Prof. Gupta recalled that these two parties have ruled this State for more than 60 years. What has happened to secularism during their tenure, is known to the world that there has been gradual exodus of not only that of minorities but also many peace loving Muslims have been forced to desert the Valley.
He also pointed out that the biggest violence and bloodshed has been there when the NC was in authority.
Quoting from an official report, Prof. Gupta pointed out that during the NC rule between 1996 to 2002, over 16000 human lives were lost. These include over 8000 militants, over 6000 innocent civilians and about 2000 men of the forces were victims of the violence. In addition to hundreds of Government buildings were destroyed.
When in authority why those solutions were not applied which are being suggested now, he asked and impressed upon the politicians to refrain from raising emotional slogans and playing politics of hatred as elections would come and go but ill will created on communal basis takes long to have cordial atmosphere. In a democracy, he said peace and development should be the main planks to woo the voters.
