SRINAGAR, Aug 23: Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education Youth and Services and Sports R S Chib today inaugurated 3-day 23rd Federation Cup Throw Ball Championship 2012 at sports ground Government College for Women M A Road ground, here today.
The championship is being organized by J&K Throw Ball Association in collaboration with Throw Ball Federation of India.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that it was the matter of proud for us to organize such a mega event in the State. He, on behalf of Chief Minister extended compliments to the organizers and participating teams assuring every support to make the event a success. He said that the participating teams across the country are the ambassadors of the State, hoping that they will convey the message of amity, generosity and hospitality to their respective States.
Chib said that J&K Throw Ball team participated first time in the 24th Senior National Throw Ball Championship-2001 held in Bhopal, adding since then it was continuously participating in all the championships of the National Federation. He said the J&K Throw Ball team qualified for the Federation Cup in 2011, adding that this year it has also qualified for the Federation Cup and was ready with both men and women teams to take part in the 23rd Federation Cup.
The Minister also mentioned that during last two decades of turmoil, the sports persons of the State did not get ample opportunities to participate in the national and state level sports events and lag behind due to lack of sports infrastructure. He said the Government under the stewardship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and with the provision of financial assistance from the Union Government is creating and upgrading the sports infrastructure for the better facilities of the players.
The Minister also extended his compliments to the medals winners of the country who participated in the recently held Olympic Games.
Giving brief introduction of Throw Ball game, General Secretary, Throw Ball Federation of India, Kamal Goswami gave brief introduction of the game.
As many as 11 teams in both male and female categories from various states and Union Territories participated in the Championship. These are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and host team of J&K.
The inaugural match was played between Delhi and Bihar teams.
Among others, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council Mr. Dalip Thussu, Principal, Government College for Women M A Road Srinagar, Prof Tanveer Ara, Joint Secretary, J&K State Sports Council Prof Bashir Ahmad, Member, J&K State Sports Council Shaikh Fazal Ahmad and Tabassum.
