Srinagar, Feb 12: Clashes erupted between stone-throwing youth and security forces in Nowhatta area of Old City here post-Friday congregation prayers.
A group of youth assembled outside historical Jamia Masjid soon in Nowhatta and staged a protest. The protesters later resorted to stone-pelting on security forces including police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) additionally deployed in the area.
Police used teargas canisters against the stone-throwing protesters and also chased them away. However, the youths regrouped themselves and continued pelting stones. The standoff between the two sides continued for several hours, resulting in disruption of the commercial and transport activities in Nowhatta, Gojwara and its adjoining neighbourhoods.
