Srinagar, Oct 16: Clashes between security forces and stone throwing youth erupted in Nowhatta area of Old City after Friday prayers today.
Soon after Friday congregation prayers were over, dozens of youth chanting slogans assembled inside the compound of historical Jama Masjid. The protesters displayed the flags of Islamic State and Pakistan and also the pictures of Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani.
The protesters resorted to heavy stone-pelting on security forces including police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who responded by firing dozens of teargas and pepper canisters towards the rock-throwers.
Due to intense clashes, additional reinforcement of security forces was brought in the area to contain the situation. The clashes between the forces and protesters continued for several hours.
The clashes halted business activities and vehicular movement in Nowhatta and its adjoining areas. There was no report of anyone getting injured during the stand-off between forces and protesters.
