SRINAGAR, Dec 16: Srinagar city today witnessed coldest night of the season as temperature plummeted by several notches to settle at minus 3.7 degree Celsius and entire city was covered in a sheet of frost in the morning.
A Metrological Department official said here: “The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 3.7 degree Celsius, a drop of 3.4 degrees compared to the previous night. The day temperature settled at 8.5 degree Celsius.”
Srinagar was covered in a sheet of frost in the morning and water at many places was frozen. However, Sun came out in the morning giving some respite from the intense cold morning.
The night temperature across Kashmir stayed below the freezing point for the first time during this season.
The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg, in north Kashmir, registered a night temperature of minus 10.0 degrees as compared to the previous nights minus 8.8 degrees Celsius. The day temperature of the placed was recorded at minus 0.4 degrees Celsius.
The mercury in Pahalgam in South Kashmir settled at minus 7.3 degrees against minus 7.5 degrees the previous night. However, the day temperature was recorded at 6.2 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund and Kokernag both in south Kashmir recorded minus 3.3 degrees and minus 2.8 degrees respectively. The day temperatures of these places was recorded at 7.4 degrees Celsius and 6.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
The night temperature in Kupwara town in North Kashmir dropped today settle at minus 4.1 degrees while the day temperature settled at 8.5 degrees Celsius.
Kargil was the coldest recorded place in the State as the minimum temperature settled at minus 14.2 degrees last night, registering a dip of nearly three degrees compared to 24 hours earlier. The day temperature settled at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius.
Leh recorded a low of minus 13.8 degrees Celsius last night with day temperature settling at 3.3 degrees Celsius.
The MET Office said the weather will remain mainly dry over the next 24 hours.
