JAMMU, Dec 2: A complex cardiac surgery was performed by Dr Nikhil Mahajan, cardiologist to revive the heart function of a 65-year-old war veteran, thus saving his life and alleviating his excruciating heart pain and breathlessness.
The patient was referred to the hospital for cardiac procedure due to reduced heart functioning and history of heart attack and breathlessness. The reduced heart function required immediate implantation of CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) device while the history of heart attack required stenting of the heart.
Under the supervision of Dr Nikhil Mahajan, the patient first successfully underwent the complex stenting process (as his arteries were completely blocked) and then a CRT-D device was implanted in the heart of the patient. As CRT-D enhance diseased hearts’ effectiveness and increase blood flow, its implantation is one of the rarest forms of surgery for cardiac treatment. The patient successfully underwent both the surgeries within a short span of time and was discharged to lead a healthy and normal lifestyle, improving his overall quality of life.
Dr Nikhil Mahajan said, “Since the patient had a history of both heart attack and reduced heart functioning, it was prudent to first perform the stenting of the heart to immediately save the patient and stop the recurrence of a heart attack. After the patient underwent a successful stenting, a CRT-D device was affixed in his heart to monitor heart’s rhythm, detect irregularities and correct them with electrical impulses”.
He further explained that CRT-D is designed to stop life-threatening ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation with overdrive pacing or electrical shocks. They improve heart failure symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath and exercise intolerance which significantly improves patients’ quality of life.”
Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai, Chief Administrative Officer at the Hospital said, “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital is equipped with world class infrastructure and equipments which was earlier available only in metros. He also mentioned that the highly qualified, dedicated and professional team of doctors and support staff are available round the clock at Narayana Hospital which helps saving lives every day.”
