Conference on ‘Indigenous Animal Genetic Resources’ at SKUAST-J from tomorrow

JAMMU, May 27: To deliberate on the consequences of loss of indigenous animal genetic resources, SKUAST Jammu is all set to host the 14th Annual Convention of the Indian Society of Animal Genetics and Breeding (ISAG&B) and national symposium on “Exploring the Potential for Sustainable Use of Indigenous Animal Genetic Resources for Enhancing Productivity and Profitability” on May 29-30, at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, R S Pura campus.
In the convention, leading experts from all over the country and abroad will deliberate on the issues concerning animal breeding and genetics, and production for identifying the research priorities for using novel technologies for enhancing productivity and profitability of the livestock farmers of the country.
This was informed by SKUAST-Jammu Vice-Chancellor Dr K S Rissam , while addressing a press conference , here today.
“Even as the introduction of exotic breeds of cattle has been one of the major drives of making India world’s largest producer of milk at 165.4 million tones, there are concerns nationally and globally about the potential long-term consequences of loss of domestic animal diversity,” said Dr Rissam.
He further said that the introduction of exotic breeds of livestock and other social and economic pressures have exposed locally adapted indigenous breeds to the risk of extinction and loss of valuable genetic diversity.
The VC said that expert panel discussion on “Genome Edited Livestock for India” will come out with recommendations that shall be of importance to policy planners in livestock sector.
Dr K S Rissam, an authority on animal breeding and genetics and Dr T J Rasool, president of the ISAG&B, will be the conveners for the round table conference whereas leading animal genetics researchers/ academicians like Dr M Mukesh, Dr T Dutt, Dr G K Gour and Dr A K Tomar are expected to be the panelists for this important discussion.
Others who were present in the press conference, included Prof M S Bhadwal, Prof Rajinder Peshin, Dr Rakesh Sharma, Dr Vivak Manohar Arya, Dr Dhirendra Kumar, Dr Khandi and Dr M S Azad.
