JAMMU, Feb 18: The Department of Statistics, University of Jammu, is organizing a three-day 18th National Annual Conference of Society of Statistics, Computer and Applications with a theme `Significance of Statistics as an Inter-disciplinary Science.
In his inaugural address, Prof R D Sharma, JU Vice Chancellor, shared his views about the importance of Statistics as a research tool in various branches of Social, Management and Behavioral Sciences apart from Natural and Biological Sciences. He also hoped that the conference would provide an opportunity to the delegates to interact and share ideas on the latest findings in the subject.
Prof V K Gupta, president of Society of Statistics, Computer and Applications, informed the delegates about various activities of the society in making the Statistics as a popular subject.
Dr R C Aggarwal, Registrar General, PV&FRA, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt of India delivered the key note address emphasizing on Food Security and how the Statistics has helped in identifying the new ways to meet the requirement of bludgeoning population of future. He talked about how the care of interest of farmers and community has led to their participatory role in developing the new varieties from their traditional knowledge.
Earlier, Prof J P Singh Joorel, Chairman of the conference, threw light on various academic activities which will take place during the conference days.
Prof A K Srivastava, delivered M N Das Memorial lecture. He chalked out the historical perspective and recent trends in Sample Surveys. HoD Statistics, Prof Rahul Gupta presented vote of thanks.
In the augural function of the conference, a book “An Introduction to Statistics” authored by Prof Ramesh Gupta and Prof Aijaz Ahmad Hakak, was also released. Various plenary and technical sessions were held on the first day of conference in which researchers shared their findings with other delegates.
Alongside a workshop was also organized in which Statistical Aspects of Community Health and Nutrition were discussed by Prof A K Nigam, Prof Ravindra Srivastava and Prof Neeraj Tiwari.
