SRINAGAR, Nov 24: The State unit of the Congress today challenged the Bhartiya Janata Party to abrogate Article 370, which gives special status to the State within the country.
“I challenge RSS, BJP, and Narendra Modi to abrogate Article 370,” Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Saif-ud-Din Soz told reporters after releasing the party’s poll manifesto.
Soz said if the Article is removed it would end the State’s “relation” with the Union of India.
“Nobody can change it (Article 370). It is a bridge and you cannot remove the bridge at any cost,” he said. Soz said the amendments to the article should not have happened.
“There has been dilution and I do not oppose your views that it should not have happened,” Soz said when asked that the Article has seen much erosion during the successive Congress rule.
He said the Congress party would make the dilution of the Article a part of the dialogue process.
“This (issue of dilution of the Article) is also a part of the dialogue process which the Congress party wants to take up as Article 370 safeguards the Kashmiriyat,” he said.
Rubbishing the claims of the BJP made during Lok Sabha polls, the Congress president said that BJP would never be able to fulfill its poll promises of building Ram Temple, implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the country and abrogation of the Article 370.
“I am telling you with full responsibility that BJP cannot do anything on these poll promises. They will never be able to implement the RSS agenda of Uniform Civil Code. Only Hindus and Muslims together can build the Ram Temple or the directions would come from the Supreme Court. No one else, including the BJP can (build it),” he said.
