Conserving Water

Sir,
This has reference to the writeup ‘International conference on water conservation begins at GDC Udhampur’ (DE, March 01, 2020). There is no doubt that water is a basic necessity for survival of life on the earth and clean potable water is imperative for ensuring the good health of human beings on the earth. But as a result of reckless activities of man leading to the pollution of water bodies ,deforestation etc. about one billion of people across the world have no access to safe drinking water. It is in this context that World Water Day is celebrated on Dec 22 every year to focus attention on the importance of universal access to clean drinking water. We need to preserve and conserve Nature to replenish forest resources by planting more and more trees. Out of total water 97.5 percent water is present in the oceans and seas, which is saltish and not worth drinking. Thus, we have only 2.5 percent fresh water most of which is locked in glaciers which supply us water throughout the year, especially during summer when it is needed the most. But as a result of global warming, glaciers are fast melting with the result that many low lying areas are facing the threat of being submerged under water.Similarly, many cities across the world, such as Karachi, Nairobi, Bengluru etc are on the verge of facing acute shortage of water and according to UNO there will be acute shortage of water in many parts of the world by 2040.
There is dire need to save every drop of water to ensure the availability of pure drinking water to one and all as a large number of people die of diseases caused by drinking contaminated water. The water resources such as lakes, ponds, wells, stepwells, bowlis, etc need to be conserved and rejuvenated. There is no doubt that our UT is richly blessed with natural resources including water resources. There is need to exploit these resources judiciously. We must change our perception that water is a resource which will never end and strive to conserve every drop of water by taking such steps such as not letting the tap remain open while brushing the teeth, shaving, using water efficient appliances, checking leakage of water, consuming less water while taking bath/washing utensils and watering the plants using rain water. At the same time, innovative ways to save water, such as making glaciers and ice stupas in cold regions must be promoted.
