SRINAGAR, Apr 29: Hundreds of contractual lecturers working in different colleges across the Valley protested against the re-apply system which requires them to apply for the continuation of their contractual services at the beginning of the academic session, at Press Enclave here today.
The protesting lecturers were carrying placards which read; “stop re-apply system, don’t scrap continuation policy “. They also chanted slogans like “continue us or kill us”.
Recently, the Education Department in Kashmir had announced that all contractual lecturers working in different colleges should re-apply for the contractual posts.
Protestors said that they were dejected and felt cheated when they learnt about the recent Government order which asked them to reapply in the middle of the academic session.
The order also debars the M Phil degree holders from applying for contractual lecturership while making only PhD, NET and SLET degree holders eligible for the contract.
It is pertinent to mention here that the education authorities had waived the requirement of reapplication for contractual lecturers for the current year due to the last year’s floods and asked them to continue their services without reapplying.
The protestors said that the reapply system was degrading and a direct attack on their self respect. “If this is how the government treats its highly educated youth what will the rest of the populace expect from them”, said one protesters while denouncing the recent Government order.
The contractual lecturers said that most of them have been working on contract for the last 10-15 years in various colleges. They said they had hoped the new Coalition Government will devise a plan under which they will be absorbed in education system on permanent basis but they said their hopes were dashed by the recent Government announcements.
