JAMMU, Jan 17: Chandigarh University (CU) has made history by winning the prestigious MAKA Trophy (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy) 2024, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at the National Sports Awards ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan. This marks the first time a private university has received the MAKA Trophy since its inception in 1956-57. CU was honoured for its outstanding performance in the Khelo India University Games 2024, where it clinched 71 medals, including 32 gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze.
Additionally, CU student and Indian Hockey Team member Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Arjuna Award for his exceptional achievements in the sport. His recognition highlights CU’s role in nurturing top-tier athletes.
Chandigarh University’s commitment to sports excellence is evident in its contributions to the Indian sports ecosystem. The CU had the highest representation at the 19th Asian Games, with 22 athletes in India’s 650-member contingent. The university provides scholarships, professional training, and world-class sports infrastructure, with 1,183 students currently benefiting from an annual scholarship of Rs 8.5 Crore.
Chandigarh University Chancellor, Satnam Singh Sandhu, expressed immense pride, reiterating CU’s dedication to producing athletes who can compete globally and help realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a top sporting nation.
