Jammu, Mar 29: Initiated by the students of the Department of National Security Studies, Central University of Jammu (CUJ), a programme on “Towards Greater Gender Sensitivity in Campus” was held today at the university’s temporary campus in Sainik Colony, Jammu.
The event was graced by the presence of Alok Dixit, Founder of Chhanv, a support centre for acid attack survivors. Also present as a special invitee, was Rupa Saa, an acid attack survivor and President Awardee of Nari Shakti-2016. Professor Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor of CUJ presided over the function as the chief guest.
Professor Mallika Joseph, Head of Department of National Security Studies lauded the students’ initiative in raising awareness within the campus on such a critical issue. She said that this campaign by the students will usher in positive change in people’s attitudes and responses to gender based issues.
Dr Jaya Bhasin, heading the Sensitization, Prevention and Redressal of Sexual Harassment (SPARSH), and also HOD of the Department of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour, explained the awareness, legal aspects and ordinances of gender equalisation, not only for men and women but also for transgender communities. Saima Shafeeq, 1st year student and gender focal point at the Department of NSS highlighted the guidelines of UGC with regard to addressing sexual harassment within higher educational institutions.
Alok Dixit gave an overview on the importance of gender sensitisation starting in schools, colleges and universities. Rupa Saa, being an acid attack survivor, shared her experiences and the struggles she faced in her life, and how she confidently confronted the challenging phases of her life.
Professor Ashok Aima, re-emphasized the importance dignity, justice, equality and respect for each other’s identity. He lamented that while power was being used to dominate others, it ought to be used to uplift and empower those around us. He stressed the need to liberate our minds from prejudices and primitive thought. The event successfully concluded with the formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof Mallika Joseph, HoD, Department of NSS.
