JAMMU, Oct 28: Department of English, Central University of Jammu (CUJ) organized a one-day National seminar on the topic “Dowry Murders: Gender Prejudiced Practices in India Today”.
The seminar deliberated upon the issue of gender imbalanced practices rampant in contemporary India. Prof Devanand, Vice Chancellor, CUJ, was the chief guest of the occasion while the Resource Persons included Prof Chandra Mohan (Retd Prof of University of Delhi) and Prof Ved Kumari Ghai (Retd Prof of Sanskrit, University of Jammu), Prof Savita Nayyar (Dept of Law, JU) and Dr Vandana Sharma ( Director, School of Languages, SMVDU).
Speaking on the occasion, the VC highlighted the relevance of the topic of the seminar and also recollected his own experiences. He asked the boys and girls to take an oath to say: ‘No to Dowry.’
Prof Nandini Bhattacharya, HoD English, CUJ, traced the practice of dowry from the ancient times of the Mahabharata to the present times. She also highlighted the fact that the short stories genre in India evolved from an incident of dowry murder.
Prof Chandra Mohan spoke on the NRIs who have also been involved in the dowry practice. Prof Ved Ghai stressed upon the fact, that “Streedhan” was not prevalent in Vedic times, and found a deep paradox in a society that accepts women as goddesses and at the same time kills its women in the womb. Prof Savita Nayyar, Dr Vandana Sharma and Dr Farooq also elucidated upon various aspects of dowry practices in India.
The afternoon session witnessed paper presentations by students, poster and slogan writing contests, film shows, rendition of dowry related songs and poems and performance of skit.
The Seminar concluded with the giving away of certificates and prizes and vote of thanks by Raj Gaurav Verma.
