JAMMU, May 26: A month-long project on Heritage under the British Council’s International School Award (ISA) programme culminated into a cultural evening celebration of the essence of heritage at Mandua Open Air Theatre, today.
The programme was delectable mix of folk songs, folk dances and folk theatre. The main objective of the cultural evening was to showcase the cultural heritage of the State of Jammu and Kashmir for the partner schools in Malaysia and Palestine. In the effort to extend school partnerships beyond the exchange of mere information, students of KC Public School also performed the folk dance of Malaysia prepared for the occasion with rigorous practice.
A short play on the life of the legendary local hero Bawa Jitto was also presented. Set in the rural backdrop of Jammu, the 15th century folk tale portrays the age-old exploitation of landless farmers by landlords. The poignant ‘ “story of Bawa Jitto” was enacted by the students of class 8th with passion and deep involvement.
The last item of the programme was a street play “ Lost Humanity: A paradise to Regain” . It has been prepared in response to the British Council’s invitation to ISA member schools to present street play on three key values of Commonwealth Games Federation, namely, Humanity, Equality, Destiny. KC Public Schools students decided to choose ‘humanity’ as the theme of their street play. It deals with the predicament of contemporary India as a victim of spiritual bankruptcy resulting from degradation of human values.
The play conveys the positive message that the youth of India is capable of restoring the lost humanity and bringing about peace, brotherhood and harmony in the country.
The show was presented in front of parents of about 100 students who took part in it.
