Curfew like restrictions, strike paralyse life in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, May 30: Curfew like restrictions continued on the third consecutive day today in most parts of Kashmir while the rest of the areas observed shutdown against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat.
The authorities imposed strict curfew like restrictions in Tral, Old Srinagar areas and in Pulwama, Anantnag and Shopian, to foil the Tral march called by the separatists.
The Tral march call was given by the separatists including Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief, Mohammad Yasin Malik.
Curfew like restrictions in Srinagar were imposed today in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations in Srinagar including Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Kralkhud and Maisuma.
Sabzar’s killing triggered protests and clashes and authorities imposed curfew like restrictions and closed schools to prevent flare up in voilence.
Huge contingent of police and paramilitary security forces were deployed in Srinagar and other sensitive areas. Police and paramilitary troopers had erected concertina wires on the main roads to thwart the vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Shops, colleges, schools and business establishments remained closed while the traffic was off the roads. Majority of the roads wore deserted look throughout the day.
The train services and the prepaid mobile telephony services continued to remain suspended for the third consecutive day today. Both the services according to the officials were suspended due to security reasons. The mobile internet services also remain suspended.
Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed for vehicular movement today in view of Tral march.
Police said that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control. “However, minor incidents of stone pelting were reported from Keller Chowk in Shopian and Court Road, Pinglish in Tral”, he said.
“At Pinglish, Tral, miscreants heavily pelted stones on police and security forces deployment in which some police and security forces personnel were injured. The deployment used maximum restraint while dealing with the situation and the miscreants were chased away. A stone pelter was injured in the incident,” police said.
He said that to avoid any untoward incident, restriction under Section 144 CrPC remained imposed in some part of the city as also in some main towns.

In the meantime, the education institutions will remain closed tomorrow for third consecutive day in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley.
District Magistrate Srinagar Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone said that the schools and colleges will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday).
According to district administration, the class work in various districts of Kashmir shall remain suspended on May 31 (Wednesday) as a precautionary measure.
In Budgam, class work in all Higher Secondary Schools and Colleges shall remain suspended tomorrow, However, the staff shall remain present in the institutions. Whereas, in Anantnag and Shopian districts, the class work shall remain suspended in all educational institutions. In Kupwara, classwork in all Degree Colleges shall remain suspended on May 31, but University level examinations will be conducted as per the schedule.
The district administration said that class work in Boys Higher Secondary School Trehgam, Girls Higher Secondary School Trehgam, Boys Higher Secondary School Kralpora, Boys Higher Secondary School Handwara, Boys Higher Secondary School Banair Langate, Boys Higher Secondary School Qalamabad, Boys Higher Secondary School Kupwara and Boys Higher Secondary School Drugmulla shall remain suspended. Remaining all Higher Secondary Schools, High Schools, Middle Schools and Primary Schools will be open in the district.
In Pulwama, the District Magistrate has ordered closure of all Schools and Colleges for two days (May 31 and June 1) as a precautionary measure.
