POONCH, Sept 17: The people from Sanai village and adjoining areas in Surankote today held strong protest demonstration against the PHE authorities and blocked Jammu-Poonch highway for about two and half hours today.
Reports said that some people noticed about 4-5 ft long dead snake lying in the large PHE water tank at village Sanai in Surankote this morning. Some more people of the village assembled there after coming to know about the  matter. They found that this tank was open from the top and there was no lid/ cover at all. It was also found dirty.
The village Panchayat members led by Sarpanch took out dead snake from the water tank and then placed  it on Jammu-Poonch highway near the village and started protest demonstration. They also raised barricades on the road and sat on dharna at around 11 am. The movement of vehicles was stalled on this busy road and big traffic jam was created in the area. The passengers got trapped there up to 1.30 pm. The people were raising slogans against PHE authorities at Poonch and Surankote and demanded action against the concerned staff.
Later, SDPO Surankote Riaz Tantray and Tehsildar Mehmood Khan, reached the spot and listened to the grievances of the people. They also visited the PHE water station at the village and inspected the water tank. They found it opened and dirty and pulled up the concerned staff. The Tehsildar also talked to Executive Engineer PHE Poonch and asked him to initiate inquiry into the matter and take cognizance of the matter within 24 hours. He also directed staff at station to stop water supply to the people till the tank is properly cleaned and chlorine etc is mixed in it to make it hygienic for public consumption. Later, on the assurance of the Tehsildar and SDPO the agitating villagers lifted dharna and  allowed movement of vehicles.
