Deadlock ends, SHO among 3 suspended

JAMMU, May 8: The deadlock between Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA), Jammu and the administration came to an end this evening as the latter ordered suspension of three police officials including SHO Gandhi Nagar police station for their alleged involvement in “harassing, beating and illegally detaining” an Advocate Harshvardhan Gupta.
A meeting of JKHCBA and a delegation from Government side headed by Principal Secretary Planning BR Sharma was held today. Home Secretary Suresh Kumar, Law Secretary Mohammad Ashraf Mir and Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu were also present during the meeting.
In the meeting, JKHCBA president MK Bhardwaj reiterated the demand of the Association regarding suspension of SHO Gandhi Nagar police station Arun Jamwal and his two subordinates for harassing, beating and illegally detaining advocate Harshvardhan Gupta on April 16.
The delegation patiently listened to the demand raised by JKHCBA and assured them to take up the matter with Government.
Later, the Home Department in an order issued today vide No. Home-200 (P) of 2014 dated May 8, 2014 has ordered suspension of SHO Gandhi Nagar police station Arun Jamwal, ASI Pritam Chand and Selection Grade Constable Vikram Choudhary.
The suspension order of the cops was issued by Special Secretary, Home Department Arshad Ayub late tonight.
The suspension order was issued by the Home Department as senior police officers including Director General of Police (DGP) refused to issue suspension order against the police officials.
When contacted MK Bhardwaj, president, JKHCBA told Excelsior that the Association has received the suspension order of the erring police officials and will decide further course of action in the Bar meeting tomorrow.
Earlier in the day, JKHCBA continued its agitation against the police officials of police station Gandhi Nagar and demanding their suspension for holding an independent, impartial and fair inquiry by staging a dharna in District Courts Complex today.
It may be mentioned here that the lawyers were on strike for the past over two weeks against the cops who allegedly manhandled an advocate on April 16 in full public view in Nanak Nagar area.
