Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Pahalgam hydel project defunct, awaits overhaul’ DE Feb 17.
At a time when Jammu and Kashmir is facing acute shortage of electricity, and the State has to shell hefty sum for purchasing it from other sources, it is very disconcerting to note that some of our old hydel projects are lying defunct. These projects can to a great extent contribute their bit in overcoming shortage of electricity in their respective areas.
It is not necessary that big hydro projects are commissioned in the State to meet the requirement. These big projects not only take pretty long time for their completion, but involve lot of money for their execution. At times these projects may cause environmental degradation, and remain prone to seismic tremors.
The State is endowed with lot of water potential. This can be harnessed profitably and safely by constructing small hydro projects throughout the State.
The Government must also revive the old power project that await technical upgradation or any other improvement.
Yours etc….
Sanjeev Sharma
