Demise of a Cartoonist

Sir,
The sad demise of eminent cartoonist, who was the younger brother of well known novelist and short story writer, RK Narayan, at a ripe age of 94 years, on January 26,2015,is a great loss to the country in general and literary world in particular.R K Luxman belonged to the band of those men who make significant contributions to the society by espousing the problems and grievances of common people through their art. I remember the days when as a reader of the Times of India, my first glance would invariably fall on the cartoon strip ‘You said it’ by R K Luxman. Everyday, he would highlight one problem or the other of the common man, of course,in his own inimitable style. The loss of such great people is impossible to be made up for centuries to come. He also illustrated almost every work of his elder brother, R K Narayan- the eminent novelist and short story writer, including his famous work’Malgudy Days’ by drawing the caricatures and sketches of various characters and events. The Government of Maharashtra gave a beffitting tribute to the great cartoonist and illustrator by according him a state funeral.Such creative talents are rarely born and his illustrious work needs to be highlighted through exhibitions and other means to serve as an inspiration for the budding talents who aspire to achieve excellence in the field of cartoons.
Yours etc….
