JAMMU, Oct 13: In order to carry out the road widening works under JNNURM and for beautification of Leh town, district administration today carried out massive demolition of shops, hotels and restaurants in the heart of city.
All these structures were under acquisition for long but the demolitions could not be carried out due to heavy influx of the tourists. About 10 shops, opposite the famous German bakery, were demolished in an operation personally headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Simrandeep Singh.
The operation started late on Saturday evening had to be suspended due to strong resistance from the public who were being evicted. However, the operation was resumed this morning and is likely to continue for another two days as the structures being demolished are in the middle of public utilities and other buildings.
There was heavy deployment of Police and the traffic on the road was diverted through other routes.
