JAMMU, Jan 12: Jammu and Kashmir thrashed Assam by 9 wickets in a one-sided contest, but the victory was not enough to take them to the quarterfinals in an 8-pool fixture as they faced a drubbing from formidable Chandigarh by 7 wickets, the third team in J&K’s pool in the ongoing 58th National School Games U-16 Boys Cricket Tournament at Sector-16 Chandigarh, today.
According to the reports reaching here, batting first, Assam scored a modest total of 106 runs in the stipulated 20 overs by losing 6 wickets. Julius (25), Anshuman (23) and Swapnil (10) were the main contributors. For J&K, Ikhlaq, Syed Payamber, Ankush and Tayab Farooq claimed one wicket each.
In reply, J&K rode on a brilliant innings of unbeaten 61 runs by Muzamil and chased the target in 12.2 overs by losing one wicket only, thus won the match by 9 wickets. Muzamil struck 7 boundaries and 2 sixes in his knock, while Dawar and Shabir contributed 18 and 11 runs to the total respectively. Dawar hit 3 and Shabir 2 fours in his knock. Rubal was the only successful bowler for Assam who claimed the wicket of Dawar.
Earlier, in another league match, J&K lost to host Chandigarh by 7 wickets. Batting first, J&K bundled out for a paltry total of 85 runs, which in reply, Chandigarh chased in 15.2 overs by losing 3 wickets to win the match by 7 wickets. 28 teams drawn from all over the Country are participating in the Tournament.
J&K team is being accompanied by Pankaj Sasan and Kisar Ahmed as coach and manager respectively.
Meanwhile, in 58th National School Games U-17 Boys Hockey Tournament, J&K defeated Puducherry by four goals to two (4-2) in an easy contest to advance in the competition.
