The first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics Dipa Karmakar will be the star attraction of the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club’s ‘Coal India Annual Awards’ at Rotary Sadan tomorrow.
The 22-year-old Tripura girl, who won Glasgow Commonwealth Games bronze medal two years ago will be awarded for ‘unparalleled contribution in gymnastics’ along with her coach Bishweshwar Nandi as part of their diamond jubilee celebrations, a CSJC media statement said.
Ace paddlers Mouma Das and Soumyajit Ghosh, who also have qualified for Rio, will be honoured in table tennis.
East Bengal star forward Ranti Martins, who won the golden boot in the recently-concluded I-League, will be feted for his contribution to football in India.
Badminton star Saina Nehwal was chosen Best Indian Sportsperson by the CSJC’s members for her stellar run in 2015 during which she also became the world No 1 singles player.
Tennis legend Jaidip Mukerjea, hockey Olympic gold medallist Bir Bahadur Chhetri and reputed power-lifter and weightlifter Sumita Laha will be the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement awards.
The Award winners are:
Lifetime Achievement: Jaidip Mukerjea (Tennis), Bir Bahadur Chhetri (hockey) & Sumita Laha (weightlifting and power-lifting).
Outstanding contribution to gymnastics: Bishweshwar Nandi. Unparalleled contribution in gymnastics: Dipa Karmakar.
Outstanding contribution to Indian football: Ranti Martins. Best Sportsperson of the Country: Saina Nehwal (badminton). Best Junior Sportsperson of the Country: Mitrabha Guha (chess).
