KIAWAH ISLAND, Aug 10:
Jeev Milkha Singh had a disappointing start in the final Major of the season as he carded a four-over 76 and was way down on the leaderboard in the 94th PGA Championship of America.
Jeev, who made the cut last month at the British Open, had three birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys in a roller-coaster of a round.
He opened with a birdie on first, but gave away a double on the very next par-5 second. Another bogey on fourth followed by a birdie on seventh saw him turn in one-over 37.
On the back nine, he birdied the tenth to come to par, but then gave away bogeys on 13th and 15th and made it worse with a double on yet another par-5 16th.
From Asian point of view, Korean K J Choi made a spirited start in the opening round of the PGA Championship with a three-under-par 69 yesterday.
Choi was five under after 11 holes but wobbled in his closing holes as he registered three bogeys, including one on the 18th hole against one birdie to trail tournament leader Carl Pettersson of Sweden by three shots.
Swedish professional golfer Carl Pettersson got off to a tremendous start as he teed off the front nine with two consecutive birdies on the first two holes. Later on the first nine holes, the 34-year-old carded two more birdies, on the fourth and seventh hole.
Pettersson started the back nine with a birdie on the tenth hole and later on the sixteenth hole, he carded another birdie for an error-free 66. He was trailed by one shot by Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren and Gary Woodland.
Kim Kyung-tae, a former Asian Tour winner, matched Choi’s score of 69 to lie in tied 14th place while Asian Tour honorary member Vijay Singh of Fiji was a further two shots back.
Bae Sang-moon of Korea, a three-time Asian Tour winner, posted a 72 followed by Y E Yang, who won the tournament in 2009 and Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, who were tied on 73s. Noh Seung-yul of Korea fired a 74. (PTI)
