Dissemination of knowledge

Eminent scientist and former President, APJ Abdul Kalam has made an interesting suggestion that homes should develop libraries so as to make the sources of knowledge available to family members and thus raise the level of education in our country. He said this  while inaugurating the 17th National Convention on “Knowledge, Library and Information Networking”, organised jointly by Delhi based Developing Library Network (DELNET) and French Institute of Puducherry. In olden days only a handful of people cared to build a small library in their homes as their means permitted. Moreover, books were not easily available or printed in bulk owing to financial constraints. But today we have a different scenario before us. There are inexpensive editions called paperback editions of books and then there are book fairs where books are sold on rebate. More people can afford to buy books for private use. In addition there should be the taste of building home libraries and this taste will percolate down to the future generations. This will help our country become more educated and more knowledgeable. The former President has made a very worthwhile suggestion and hopefully it will have its impact.
It is true that computer and internet have made it very easy for one to reach the sources of knowledge. It has definitely changed the level of knowledge and awareness. But the books, especially the books of history and philosophy, are inexhaustible material which it would be nice to preserve for ourselves and for posterity.
