JAMMU, Aug 24: Defeating an equally balanced side of Udhampur in the summit clash by 3 wickets, District Doda boys lifted the title trophy in the Divisional Level Inter-District Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament, which concluded at Green Field Ground, Gandhi Nagar here today.
Director General Youth Services and Sports, Navin Aggarwal was the chief guest on the valedictory function, who distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up teams on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Aggarwal while lavishing praise on Doda district victorious team said that it was good to see players of hilly and rural areas performing better at the higher levels, adding that such performances from the players of far-flung areas will force the talented players work harder to achieve results.
He hoped that the players will carry forward the good performances to the bigger circuit of the game.
The Director General Sports was accompanied by the Deputy Director, Jammu Ved Prakash, under whose supervision the mega event was held.
Earlier, winning the toss and batting first, Udhampur scored a modest total of 56 runs in 9.3 overs. Sunil Kumar was the top scorer with 29 runs, while Sunil Sharma contributed 9 runs to the total. For Doda, Amit Singh bagged 3 wickets, while Kamran claimed 2.
In reply, Doda scored the required runs in 9.1 overs by losing 5 wickets, thus winning the match by 3 wickets. Amit Singh scored 20 runs, while Kamran chipped in with 11 runs.
Amit Singh was adjudged man of the match and man of the tournament, while Nadia of District Jammu was declared man of the match in girls section.
Earlier, in the first semifinal, Udhampur defeated Samba by 36 runs. Batting first, Udhampur scored 65 runs in 8 overs by losing 7 wickets. Rajat and Saksham contributed 17 and 15 runs to the total respectively. Ashwani claimed 3 wickets for Samba.
In reply, Samba bundled out for paltry total of 19 runs in 5.1 overs.
In the second semifinal, Doda thrashed Reasi by 7 wickets. Reasi scored 34 runs in 7.5 overs, which Doda chased easily in 5.4 overs by losing one wicket, thus won the match by 7 wickets. Amit Singh and Kamran were the star performers for Doda, while Ankush performed well for Reasi.
The proceedings of the valedictory function were conducted by Rajesh Dhar, convener of the event, while prominent among others present on the occasion were Jaswant Singh, Anju Gupta, BK Tikoo, Sadiq Hussain, observers of Tennis Ball Cricket Association.
The matches were officiated by Jagtar Singh, Satpal Singh, Suresh Singh, Pankaj Sasan, Madan Mohan and Satika Sharma.
