KATRA, Mar 6: 21st Shiv Khori Kesari Annual Vishal Dangal (Wrestling Competition) was held at Govt High School Ransoo, base camp of holy shrine to mark the successful completion of three days Annual Shiv Khori Mela.
The dangal which is locally known as ‘Shinj’ was organized by J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in collaboration with J&K Tourism Department, Shiv Khori Dangal Committee and District Administration Reasi under the overall supervision of Shiv Kumar Sharma and Sarpanch Kewal Krishan.
Former Minister of State for Finance and Planning, Ajay Nanda was chief guest on the occasion, while Mr Sharma, Treasurer Indian Style Wrestling Association of India, who is also President J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association and former Joint Secretary J&K State Sports Council, presided over the function.
The Association extended thanks to Om Parkash Bhagat, Director Tourism Jammu, for giving financial assistance of Rs 1,00,000 for conduct of one day Wrestling Competition (Vishal Dangal).
Mr Sharma said that ‘dangals’ keep the youth away from many bad habits like drug addiction and infuse self discipline in them.
36 bouts were fought during the competition in which local wrestlers and wrestlers from various parts of the country participated.
Wrestler Nisar Ahmed from Doda of J&K Police declared Winner of 21st Shiv Khori Kesari Dangal and he was cash awarded with Rs 9,000 along with traditional “Gurj and Patta”. The first runner-up Wrestler Suresh from Pathankot (Punjab) got Rs 6,000 as cash prize.
Second bout was won by Ajay Sharma of Udhampur who defeated Akash of Goal Bagh Stadium Amritsar. Ajay was cash awarded with Rs 8,000 while runner-up Wrestler Akash got Rs 5,000. Third bout was won by Kaka of R S Pura Jammu who defeated Wrestler Sheru of Pathankot.
Speaking on the occasion, Nanda emphasized the need for inculcating the spirit of Sportsmanship and its role in National Character building.
He said the event has become cementing force between people of different regions and provides encouragement to the local wrestlers.
Mela officer B.D.O Pouni, Om Parkash, Tehsildar Reasi Lekh Raj, B.M.O Dr. Raspal Singh and SDPO Reasi Dr. Waseem were the guests of honour.
First time one women bout was also played between Arfana Akhtar of Pouni and Poonam of Saloon, which was won by Arfana Akhtar.
