JAMMU, Sept 11: “Children living in Child Care Institutions often do not associate the holidays with happiness because they are away from their families”, observed by Dr. Sushil Sharma while conducting a day long medical camp at Bal Gran Channi Rama , Jammu to sensitize the children about the prevalence of rheumatic and congenital heart diseases.
Accompanied by Prof. Arvind Jasrotia (HOD/Nodal Director, CHILDLINE, Department of Law,University of Jammu ) and a team of young doctors and paramedics, Dr. Sharma examined children of the homes and people of adjoining areas for prevalence of cardiac diseases and other health ailments.
More than 110 children were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and free medicines were given as per the requirements. Dr. Sushil and his team advised them to take certain precautions necessary for overcoming the dangerous diseases which not only make children sick but are harmful for their healthy future.
While interacting with the inmates of the Home Dr Sushil said rheumatic fever is a major cause of concern for children in the age group of 5-15 years. He elaborated that children having any such symptoms may become susceptible to rheumatic fever such as a sore throat, a sore throat with tender and swollen lymph nodes, a red rash, difficulty swallowing ,thick bloody discharge from nose, a temperature of 101°F or above, tonsils that are red and swollen ,tonsils with white patches or pus, red spots on the roof of their mouth, headache, nausea and vomiting such symptoms require strep test.
“Rheumatic fever can cause permanent damage to the heart, including damaged heart valves and heart failure. Treatments can reduce tissue damage from inflammation, lessen pain and other symptoms, and prevent the recurrence of rheumatic fever,” headded.
Dr Sharma also stressed that another common concern among children is congenital defect. Out of 1000 births, at least 8 babies will have some form of congenital heart disorder, most of which are mild. If you or other family members have already had a baby with a heart defects, your risk of having a baby with heart disease may be higher.”
Dr Sushil advised children to Practice proper hygiene methods to prevent strep throat like covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing, washing their hands ,avoid contact with people who are sick and avoid sharing personal items.
Others who were part of this philanthropic effort included Dr. Mohi Kalsotra, Dr Dhaneshwar Kapoor and Dr Anitipal Singh. Paramedics and Volunteers who were part of this endeavour included Kamal Kishore, Kashmiri Lal, Lokesh Manni , Gourav Sharma, Rajeev Vohra, Rajkumar, Vikas Sabharwal, Ashish Soni, Vikas kumar, Rohit Khajuria (Coordinator) and Nitan Sharma (Research Scholar, Law department) .
