Driver, associate killed as tanker plunges into gorge

RAMBAN, June 11: A driver and his associate were killed, when the tanker they were travelling in, skidded off the road and plunged into gorge near Mehar area of the district on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK02AU-4895 and carrying chemical for manufacturing of bats and plywood was on its way to Srinagar from Udhampur, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it plunged into 15 feet deep gorge near Mehar at around 12 pm, resulting into on the spot death of driver and his associate.
After getting information, police team led by SHO Ramban Inspector Ajay Bhat along with SDRF and local volunteers rushed to the spot and after hectic efforts, the bodies were retrieved with the help of hydra cranes as the same got pressed under the vehicle.
The bodies were shifted to District Hospital Ramban, where after conducting autopsy, the bodies were handed over to legal heirs for last rites.
The deceased have been identified as driver Mohammad Hanief (45), son of Abdul Aziz Khan and Mohammad Iqbal (conductor), son of Anwar Khan, both residents of Kokernag, district Anantnag.
A case under FIR Number 85/18 under Section 279 and 304-A RPC has been registered at Ramban Police Station and investigation started.
