Dropping of the pilot

Captain Mohinder Singh Dhoni shot into prominence as India’s ace cricketer, wicket keeper and batsman. After playing 90 Test matches, 60 of them as captain, Dhoni announced his retirement from Test Cricket in Melbourne. Paying him glowing tribute, the BCCI said in a statement that “One of India’s greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of Cricket.” Dhoni had endeared himself to millions of cricket fans of our country. He has been cool and calm and always inspired his team mates even in moments of anxiety. He comes from Jharkhand but by sheer dint of merit and dedication he rose to be the celebrated captain of Indian cricket team and won many laurels on the ground. Dhoni did not give any specific reason for his decision to quit test cricket, yet it is speculated that owing to bad performance of the Indian team in recent test matches in UK and Australia, he decided to take the responsibility and then decided to quit. He has quit gracefully and in the true tradition of great sportsmen. History will not forget how gracefully he conducted himself at this game.
We are sanguine in appreciating Dhoni for his contribution and for leading the team through difficult times and situations and inspiring it with renewed spirit. Nobody can be perfect and Dhoni, too, has had his share of weaknesses. He may not have been able to assert at times and perhaps more was expected from him at critical occasions, but these are the nuances of an unpredictable game called cricket. Dhoni will always find his name among the stalwarts of Indian cricket and youngsters will for long continue tor receive inspiration from his example.
