JAMMU, July 19: Hailing from a small village Jandial Thati, tehsil Bhalwal of district Jammu, fencing queen Chhavi Sharma was accorded a warm reception at Jammu on her return from New Zealand after her wonderful show fetched her sabre team bronze in the ongoing 2024 Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship at Christchurch in New Zealand.
A reasonable number of her well-wishers including sportspersons and the officers and officials of the Department of Youth Services and Sports, and J&K Sports Council accorded a warm reception to the champion at Jammu Airport on her return from Christchurch.
Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports (Central), Jitender Mishra honoured Chhavi with a bouquet as a token of gratitude from the Department for her remarkable achievement.
“After her great show in the 67th National School Games last season, we were always hopeful that she was all set to bring laurels to J&K UT and the Nation at the higher levels. This achievement at a young age will serve her as a launching pad for a brilliant future. She has made all of us proud,” said Mishra.
Meanwhile, Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, Director Youth Services and Sports, Subash Chander Chibber and Secretary J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull in their congratulatory messages have lauded her efforts for this wonderful achievement.
“Chhavi has displayed extraordinary grit and guts at the 2024 Commonwealth Games’. Securing medals at that level is always an uphill task. Now, she is going to serve as an inspiration for budding fencers,” maintained Ujjwal Gupta, her coach.
