Efforts on to produce international stuff through outstanding coaches: Jahangir Mir

JAMMU, Apr 22:Expressing satisfaction over the performance of State teams in the 61st National School Games, organized by School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at different venues last year, Director General Youth Services and Sports, Jahangir Mir said that Jammu and Kashmir has succeeded in carving a space on the map of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) by winning galaxy of medals at the National scene, showing good performance in the team games and hosting six National Level events in the State.
Mr Mir said this during a meeting of the officers and officials of the activities section of the Directorate which was also attended by some prominent sportspersons employed in the Department.
He said, the Government, which is committed to promote sports in nooks and corners of the State, has recruited outstanding sportspersons in various departments, especially in the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), with an aim to improve the standard of sports and games in the State, adding that the DYSS has the distinction of having the services of some extraordinary sportspersons at hand, among which Bilquis Mir, Atul Pangotra, Arshid Bhat and Nirmal Singh are a few to name.
The Director General Sports further said that the efforts are on to utilize the services of these outstanding sportspersons properly for producing international stuff.
“Utilizing services of outstanding sportspersons properly was hardly a custom in the past. However, for exploring the talent of budding sportspersons at the grass-root level and refining their skill to blossom at the higher levels, making full use of services of the employees from outstanding sports background  is must,” DG maintained.
It is pertinent to mention here that the sports session of 2015-16 has been fruitful for the state of Jammu and Kashmir as apart fromState and National level tournaments, hundreds of physical education lecturers and teachers were appointed in the Department, besides scholarships worth Rs. 18 lakhs were distributed among budding sportspersons.
“The State of Jammu and Kashmir participated in 36 sports disciplines, winning 38 medals, with 5 gold, 10 silver and 23 bronze at the National scene with a participation of over 2.50 lakh students players in local and national level tournaments, hosted six National level sports events including under-19 football event which was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister, J&K, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at Srinagar in the month of October, 2015 and Under-17 girls National cricket event, declared open by Governor NN Vohra at Jammu in December, 2015,” Mr Mir informed.
“The department has a long way to go under the leadership of CM Mehbooba Mufti, and Minister for Sports, Imran Raza Ansari to achieve the desired goal,” DG further maintained.
