JAMMU, June 7: Reflecting upon the age-old dilemma of choosing between morality and the so-called practicality, a Hindi drama ‘Ek Aur Dronacharya’ was staged under the banner of Unison Repertory in collaboration with Amateur Theatre Group, at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Written by playwright Shankar Sesh, directed by young and talented Ifra Kak, the play’s plot had two stories running parallel and interwoven together: One revolved around a professor hailing from a middle-class family who surrenders honesty and integrity for the sake of materialistic gains. While the other was about Dronacharya, who faced by poverty and wife’s tearing remarks, agrees to instruct Pandavas and Kauravas as his vow of never teaching non Brahmin crumbles under the weight of logic, the idealist inside of him suffers silently. In the end, Dronacharaya and professor both feel guilty of promoting narrow interests.
It was a treat to see a well-synchronized performance which slowly came to a full bloom to emerge as a thought-provoking theatrical presentation. All members of the cast gave a scintillating performance. Especially impressive was Sunil Parkash Sharma, in his double roles of Prof Arvind as well as Dhronacharya. Sandeep Verma as Principle was successful in portraying the spineless man who will go to any extent to save his ‘naukri’.
The three female actors Sunaina Kumari as Leela, Kaanchi Khajuria as Kripy and Delight Sarah Williams as Anuradha—all were almost flawless in their respective roles. Others who also gave good performances were Vivek Sangotra as President, Sanam Sudan as Chandu, Susheel Raina as Vimalendu, Mohit Singh Chib as Yadhu and Bhishma, Dhruv Sharma as Ashwathama (young), Ankit Sharma as Ashwathama and Judge, Mohit Purie as Arjun, Tovin Kumar as Eklavya and Vakeel 2, and Mohit Kaul as Vakeel 1.
The Set marked with well spaced suggestive areas conspicuous for artistic design elements was designed by Mushtaq Kak. Music by Mohit Mehra, sound by Lokesh Kumar, costumes by Sanam, Sudan and Shiv Dev Singh, who also did make-up and lights by Pankaj Sharma and Junaid Kak. Sunil Parkash was the associate director.
