Srinagar, Aug 17: Former Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation Junaid Azim Mattu along with 41 Corporators of the SMC has moved to High Court for removal of Deputy Mayor by putting to vote the resolution of no-confidence moved by the Corporators.
Mattu along with other Corporators has sought immediate meeting to consider and put to vote the resolution of no-confidence moved by the majority of the Corporators against the present Deputy Mayor Parvaiz Qadri.
Petitioners sought that Deputy Mayor be directed to prove his majority on the floor of the House of Srinagar Municipal Corporation. They submitted that Qadri be restrained from exercising the powers of Deputy Mayor.
“Remove Qadri from the office of Deputy Mayor for the reason of his having lost the majority support of the Corporators”, read the petition.
On July 14, a resolution of no-confidence motion against the incumbent Deputy Mayor signed by 38 Corporators was moved and received in the office of the Secretary, Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
“The official respondents are hell bent to conduct the floor test to judge the majority support of Deputy Mayor so as to legitimize his continuation in the office”, petitioners submitted before the court.
That the resolution, they added, for motion of no-confidence moved against the incumbent Deputy Mayor is signed by 38 Corporators, which is more than the majority of the total elected Corporators/ Councillors required to maintain the motion of no-confidence.
Referring to the Rules of 2005, it is said, that the resolution has to come up a consideration and voting after 48 hours of its presentation for consideration but despite lapses of about one month; the officials have not taken any steps to convene the special meeting of the Corporation and put to the vote to consider the resolution of no-confidence against the Deputy Mayor.
