Extension lecture on power factor held

JAMMU, Dec 18: An extension lecture was delivered by Er B RVerma, Dean Academic Affairs Yogananda College of Engineering and Technology on Power factor to the 5th Semester Electrical and Electronics Engineering students of IECS and North Polytechnic, Purkhoo camp-Jammu, today.
The calculations of Power factor were demonstrated by explaining different formulas:
Cos Ø = R/Z, where R is the resistance and Z is the impedance. Also he exhorted that power in terms of power factor can be represented by P=VI Cos Ø Er Verma, explained that value of Cos Ø, which is known as power factor has value always less than unity. If the value of Cos Ø is improved, the transmitted power can be improved and hence the efficiency.
Therefore, while transmitting power from generating station to grid station and from grid station to the users the value of the power factor is always kept maximum. So by improving the power factor, the transmission efficiency is increased.
Thereby the transmission efficiency increased is due to reduction in power loss and reduction in voltage drop.
It was a quite an interactive and informative session. Er B R Verma complimented students and advised them to strive for enrichment of their academic knowledge and upgrade technical skills to be ready for their professional careers.
Prominent among other senior faculty members present during the session were Er Ajay Singh Jamwal Dean Administration, IECS, Prof K G Gupta, Principal – IECS and Prof K R Sharma, Principal – North Polytechnic.
