JAMMU, Dec 3: Aggrieved over alleged harassment by the Head of Department, faculty members and students of the Geology Department in Jammu University today went on indefinite strike.
After a day long peaceful protest demonstration, indefinite dharna was launched in front of the Geology Department while three senior faculty members announced hunger strike. The protest was continuing till the last reports came in. The protesting faculty members and students are demanding immediate removal of the incumbent HoD Geology, Prof Avtar Singh Jasrotia.
Even as JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Manoj K Dhar along with Registrar Prof Rajni Dhingra and other senior officers of the university personally visited the protesting faculty and assured necessary action after an inquiry, the later refused to suspend their strike till removal of the HoD.
While the three faculty members sat on hunger strike, students of semester I and III boycotted their minor 2nd exam today for immediate removal of Prof Jasrotia as HoD.
The protesting faculty members, students and scholars of the Geology Department alleged un-necessary harassment by the HoD. They claimed that Prof Avtar Singh Jasrotia use foul language and threaten the students as well as faculty members of dire consequences if they complain against his dictatorial functioning.
The protesters claimed that they had also brought the matter into the notice of the University administration but no action was taken in this regard for the reasons best known to the concerned authorities.
“We had no option other than to go on indefinite strike and adopt agitational path,” said Dr Yudhveer Singh, Associate Professor, who along with Prof G M Bhat and Prof S K Pandita is sitting on hunger strike.
