SRINAGAR, July 5: A three-day Mega Chess Workshop-cum-Tournament organized under the aegis of Shakti Vijay Brigade in partnership with All J&K Chess Association, with the motive of diversion of youth mind towards sports and positive direction and mass involvement in sports which enthralled the people of Tangdhar region concluded.
The workshop-cum-tournament conducted at Kandi, Tadd and Chinar 9 Jawan Club, Tithwal drew around 2500 children, youth and also senior citizens including sarpanchs and panchs from different parts of Tangdhar.
The students from primary to senior classes evinced much enthusiasm and thronged the workshops despite holidays. It was amazing to see lot of senior citizens also keenly attending the workshops besides lot of girls.
54 students selected from the workshop were pitted against each other in six different groups. 18 victorious students from various groups were awarded prizes, certificates and medals. Faizan Parvaiz, Abhay Jasrotia, Mohammad Ajmal Khan and Tanveer Ahmed were winners in various boys category starting from Standard Ist to Open Category while Saiba Khan, Khalida Bano and Asima Imtiyaz bagged top spot amongst girls.
Atul Kumar Gupta, President, All J&K Chess Association stated that chess is most popular sport in the world after football being played in more than 180 countries. Chess is recognized by Government under various benefits for sports quota. He further brought out the benefits of Chess in development of mental faculties especially of young students who have impressionable minds. Chess can directly involve thousands of youth at a time and can be most effective and popular in a State like J&K where at most of the places it is snowbound for considerable period of time.
Commanding Officer 12 Maratha LI Colonel Vinay Jasrotia, Deputy Commander, Shakti Vijay Brigade, Colonel Sunil Kumar Saul expressed their happiness over the enthusiasm shown by students especially the youth in the chess workshop and emphasized its role protecting the youth from various ills by diverting young impressionable minds towards sports.
Qazi and Ex-Principal Abdul Hameed on behalf of people of Tangdhar (Karnah) said that such events is a viable platform for the youth to hone their skills for participation at the State and national level chess tournaments.
Among others present were Tehsildar, Sarpanchs, Panchs, officials from Civil Administration, AJKCA Vice President Baldev Raj, Press Secretary Kuljeet Singh Jamwal, etc.
