The incident of firing within court premises is shocking and deplorable. In the first place, it is a reflection on Government’s security bandobast. Security bandobast stands totally exposed. Court is a sensitive place where litigants, generally at loggerheads with their opponents, have to present themselves before the magistrate for court hearing. Obviously, a court is a meeting place of opponents. Hence, there are more chances of these antagonistic elements indulging in fracas leading to some serious consequence. This is precisely what happened. Two contending groups first started an altercation and then came to blows and in the process, one of the persons fired from his licensed pistol injuring one person. This sent scare down the spine of onlookers and lawyers who had to find a cover lest the fracas extends to a larger number of people present on the occasion.
The lawyers and judicial staff have the reason to feel insecure in such circumstances. How come that a person with a pistol managed to enter the premises and then fire at a particular person forgetting that he was in court campus and could be arrested and punished for a crime of disrupting public order and assaulting a man. We are relieved to know that the DIG came on spot and took immediate action against two police officials who were in charge of security bandobast at the court premises. It is important that a case of dereliction of duty is field against them and they are punished for the same. However, the more important thing is to tighten security measures at the court and frisk unknown persons to ensure that they do not carry firearms that could become source of threat to a judge or an advocate or any other functionary. Police authorities should immediately beef up security arrangement at the court premises. However, the police seniors will have to give formal assurance that full security and safety will be provided to the judicial staff, judges and the lawyers at all costs. Action against the miscreants, already under arrest, shall be taken immediately.
